A low-octane comedy by one of 20th-century cinema's great critics of modernity, Jacques Tati. The director's alter ego, Monsieur Hulot, returns as a hapless automaker racing to deliver his latest fandangle model to an auto show. The road to Amsterdam is paved with breakdowns, bungles and bumper-to-bumper traffic, scenes of gridlock orchestrated as a comic cacophony of horns, screeching brakes, and muzak. Preparing the film, Tati spent hours observing holiday traffic: 'People going away for the weekend. Not a smile. A dog looked out of the back of one car, staring at a field where he could have run about.' Playful and quietly subversive, Traffic lampoons a society hurtling toward progress yet going nowhere fast.
